General Information:

The Hemispheric Meeting of Reflection and Exchange: "Another America is Possible" will be held in Quito, Ecuador, on Monday October 28 through Wednesday 30 2002*, with the purpose of:

- Deepening understanding of what is behind of the Free Trade Area of the Americas - FTAA - and its future consequences.

- Enhancing the proposals for alternative integration.

- Giving greater visibility to the resistance against the FTAA

This meeting will be held within the framework of the Hemispheric Resistance Days against the FTAA, which will be carried out during the month of October in each country within the hemisphere. The meeting dates are concurrent with the Ministerial Meeting of the FTAA, which is scheduled for the last week of that month in Quito.

The meeting is organized by the continental Committee of the Hemispheric Campaign against the FTAA, a coordination initiative for developing proposals, that is linking networks, entities, social and political movements, alliances, trade unions and social coalitions, that have raised their voice in resistance against the Free Trade Area of the Americas - FTAA-.

* On Sunday October 27, from midday, a inaugural cultural event will take place. On Thursday 31 and Friday November 1, demonstrations in front of the FTAA Ministerial Meeting will be held.

Methodology of the Meeting:

The meeting “Another America is Possible” plans to be a meeting space in which to deepen awareness, develop critical focuses, exchange on alternative proposals and strategies and to show resistance against the FTAA. The various themes to be addressed will include as cross cutting issues: Gender, Human Rights, diversity and plurality

The Meeting will be comprised of three types of activity:

  • Conferences
  • Panels
  • Workshops

Conferences: Deal with the more general framework in which the negotiations around the FTAA and the debate over alternatives is being carried out.

  • Militarization of the American Hemisphere
  • External Debt, Economic and Financial crises in the Americas
  • FTAA versus An Alternative for the Americas

Panels:

Aim to debate the Agreement itself and its impacts along with the strategies of social movements.

Core themes and topics

For the Meeting, three core themes have been defined. Each is further divided into three sub themes, which in turn contain specific issues.

On the evening of 30 October a coordinating table will be opened to allow all proposals developed in the different core themes to be seen together, this will allow for the development of a plan of action against the FTAA.



Workshops

They are activities proposed and organized by participating entities, movements and organizations. Their goal is to enable encounters, exchange of experiences, coordination, planning and definition of strategies for groups, alliances, networks, regarding their present and future actions.

Registration of Workshops:

Participating organizations can propose the organization of workshops.

Format: 3 hours in duration.

Coordination, minutes, translation, recording, and any other related costs are the sole responsibility of those who propose the workshop. The organizers will only provide the venue.

Deadline for registering workshops: September 30.

Depending on the number of registered workshops and the available spaces, the organizing committee reserves the right to propose the combining of registered workshops.

Registration of Participants:

Participation is open to all people who agree with the objectives of the Hemispheric Campaign against the FTAA. The only condition is registration prior to the workshop. The deadline for registration is Friday October 18.

Costs: The registration fee is voluntary and can be paid on collection of the registration badge.

Accommodation in Quito:

The reservation of accommodation and associated costs of staying in Quito, meals and refreshments, are the responsibility of each participant.
