Among the activities and mobilizations in response to climate change that will take place around the world in the coming weeks, is the South-South Summit on Climate Justice and Finance that will be held in Cancun, Mexico. This event will bring together dozens of movements, networks, and groups from throughout the global South, with the aim of articulating and strengthening their capacity to act jointly in the face of the advancing climate crisis and the need to change the logic of the responses that have until now been offered by those who are responsible for the ecological crisis as well as the systemic crisis of which it forms part.

The decision to hold this Summit, prior to the 16th Conference of Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is a recognition of the importance of strengthening the analysis, contributions, leadership, and solutions, in and from the South, as part of global efforts to respond to the challenges of climate change.

With the general aim of advancing unities and collective campaigning efforts, the South-South Summit on Climate Justice and Finance will be a venue for forging common demands in relation to a variety of aspects, including: the rights of peoples and of nature; the responsibilities and obligations of industrialized country (Northern) governments; the role and policies of international financial institutions, transnational corporations, and other relevant global players; the responsibilities and obligations of South governments, as well as also advancing common strategies and initiatives related to the COP16 and beyond.

The South Summit will begin in Cancun on November 26th, and delegates will meet in plenary sessions and working groups through the 28th. Between November 29th and December 3rd, Summit participants will work in thematic commissions in parallel to the official COP16 negotiations, in which many will also participate as civil society observers. The Summit will resume session December 3 to 5 in order to finalize agreements and follow-up plans of action. These will be presented publicly and Summit delegates will participate further in the broad diversity of activities to take place in Cancun through December 11th, including the launching of the global campaign World Bank out of Climate Finance! and a preliminary hearing of the International Peoples’ Tribunal on Ecological Debt and Climate Justice.

The realization of this Summit will be an occasion to strengthen movement-building throughout the South, and to identify new actions and joint strategies among the diverse networks, organizations, movements, and peoples who are presently conducting critical campaigns in the face of the crises, including the climate crisis, both in the South and globally.
